What Is a Torn Retina?

The vitreous is the gel in the middle of the eye. It has fluidity and is able to move about. Usually, the vitreous moves away from the retina without causing problems. But sometimes the vitreous pulls hard enough to tear the retina in one or more places.

What Is a Detached Retina?

Fluid may pass through a retinal tear, lifting the retina off the back of the eye–like wallpaper can peel off a wall. When the retina is pulled away from the back of the eye like this, it is called a retinal detachment.

What Are the Symptoms of a Torn or Detached Retina?

The retina does not work when it is torn or detached, causing your vision to become blurry. A detached retina is a very serious problem that almost always causes blindness unless it is treated with detached retina surgery.

How Are These Conditions Treated?

Your eye doctor can use one of several methods to treat your retina. Laser surgery and cryotherapy are two common procedures. Your ophthalmologist will examine your eyes and recommend the option that will give you the best chance for preserving your sight.
